Cannabutter, also known as "cannabis butter," is a versatile base for edible cannabis products. Whether for cookies, cakes, or other treats - with cannabutter you can give your favorite recipes a special twist. Here we show you step by step how you can easily make cannabutter yourself.
What is cannabutter?
Cannabutter is butter that has been infused with the active ingredients of cannabis, particularly THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It is used as an ingredient in a variety of edible cannabis products. The process of making it requires some patience, but is doable even for beginners.
ingredients and utensils
Ingredients:
- 10 g of cannabis flowers (or an amount of your choice)
- 250 g butter (unsalted)
- 500 ml of water
Utensils:
- baking tray
- baking paper
- cooking pot
- Fine sieve or cheesecloth
- bowl or glass for storage
- wooden spoon
Step 1: Decarboxylation
Decarboxylation is a crucial step in releasing the active ingredients in cannabis. It involves converting THCA, an inactive form, into THC using heat.
- Preheat your oven to 115 °C.
- Crumble the cannabis flowers into small pieces and spread them evenly on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
- Bake the cannabis for about 30-40 minutes, stirring gently every 10 minutes to ensure even heating.
Step 2: Heat butter and water
- Pour 500 ml of water into a saucepan and heat it over medium heat.
- Once the water is heated, add the butter and let it melt slowly.
The water helps protect the butter from overheating and prevents the cannabinoids from being destroyed.
Step 3: Add Cannabis
- Add the decarboxylated cannabis to the melted butter.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
Step 4: Filter
- Pour the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into a bowl. This will remove any plant residue and leave you with a clear cannabutter.
- Carefully squeeze out any remaining liquid from the plant remains.
Step 5: Let cool
- Allow the filtered butter mixture to cool to room temperature and then place it in the refrigerator.
- After a few hours, the butter will separate from the water. Remove the solid butter and discard the remaining water.
storage and use
Store the cannabutter in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last for up to two weeks. Alternatively, you can freeze it to extend its shelf life.
Important instructions
- Dosage: Be careful with the amount of cannabis you use. It is better to start with a smaller amount and test the effects before increasing the dosage.
- Responsible consumption: Always consume edible cannabis products in moderation and make sure they are kept out of the reach of children and pets.
With these instructions, you are well equipped to make your own cannabutter. Have fun experimenting and enjoying!
